Aromatherapy for when you are Sick

Aromatherapy can be very useful for relieving the symptoms of colds and flues. Some oils will act as expectorants which can relieve congestion and coughing. Some oils can help reduce fever while others are anti bacterial and anti viral. Aromatherapy can help us recover faster as well as treat our symptoms. Below, you will find different uses of aromatherapy to help you out when you are sick.
Aromatherapy for Boosting the Immune System:
- Tee Tree
- Thyme
- Grapefruit
- Lavender
Application:
- Put 2 drops of each on your hands and rub on your upper chest and on the pulse points of your neck.
- Put 2 drops of each in an essential oil burner.
- Put 2 drops of each in 2 cup of hot water. Submerge a cloth in the water, strain and place the cloth on your chest.
- You can do a steam with 3 drops of eucalyptus, 3 drops of Tea Tree and 3 drops of lavender. Add these oils to a bowl of steaming water and cover your head with a towel and place it over the bowl. If you find it hard to breath you can remove the towel to allow oxygen to come in.
Aromatherapy for Bronchitis:
- Eucalyptus
- Tea Tree
- Lavender
Application:
- You can do a steam with 3 drops of eucalyptus, 3 drops of Tea Tree and 3 drops of lavender. Add these oils to a bowl of steaming water and cover your head with a towel and place it over the bowl. If you find it hard to breath you can remove the towel to allow oxygen to come in.
- Apply 2 drops of each oil to 1 teaspoon of grape seed oil and massage the chest and back where the lungs are found.
- Aromatherapy for Colds:
- Niaouli
- Thyme
- Peppermint
Application:
- Add 2 drops of each to 1 teaspoon of jojoba oil and massage the chest and upper back 3-4 times a day for 3 days.
- Add 2 drops of each to a bowl of boiling hot water. Place a towel over your head and your head over the bowl to breath in the steam. If you find hard to breathe you can remove the towel to let more oxygen in.
Aromatherapy for Fever:
- Lavender
Application:
- On a cloth that has been soak in cold water add 3 drops of lavender oil and pass it over your face, chest and back. The cooling affects of lavender should help bring down the fever. Repeat 4-6 times a day.
- You can also put 3 drops on a cold wet cloth and apply it on your forehead as a cold compress.
Aromatherapy for Laryngitis:
- Thyme
- Rosewood
- Niaouli
Application:
- Put 3 drops of each in 1 teaspoon of olive oil and massage around the throat.
- Put 3 drops of each in a bowl of boiling hot water. Place a towel over your head and your head over the bowl to breath in the steam. If you find hard to breathe you can remove the towel to let more oxygen in.
Aromatherapy for Pneumonia:
- Peppermint
- Lemon
- Thyme
- Tea Tree
Application:
- Add 2 drops of each to 1 teaspoon of jojoba oil and massage the chest and upper back 3-4 times a day for 3 days.
- Add 2 drops of each to a bowl of boiling hot water. Place a towel over your head and your head over the bowl to breath in the steam. If you find hard to breathe you can remove the towel to let more oxygen in.
Aromatherapy for Sinusitis:
- Tee Tree
- Eucalyptus
- Peppermint
Application:
- Add 2 drops of each to a bowl of boiling hot water. Place a towel over your head and your head over the bowl to breath in the steam. If you find hard to breathe you can remove the towel to let more oxygen in.
- Add 1 drop of each to your hands and rub on your forehead. Make sure not to get any in the eyes. Repeat 4 times a day.
Aromatherapy for Sore Throats:
- Ginger
- Lemon
Application:
- Put 3 drops of ginger and 2 drops of lemon in 2 tablespoons of water and use like a mouth rinse. Do not swallow.
- Put 3 drops of each in 1 teaspoon of olive oil and massage around the throat.
- Put 3 drops of each in a bowl of boiling hot water. Place a towel over your head and your head over the bowl to breath in the steam. If you find hard to breathe you can remove the towel to let more oxygen in.
Aromatherapy for Tonsillitis:
- Lemon
- Ginger
- Tea Tree
- Lavender
Application:
- Put 3 drops of ginger and 2 drops of lemon in 2 tablespoons of water and use like a mouth rinse. Do not swallow.
- Add 2 drops of each to your hands and rub in your neck where your tonsils are situated.
- Put 2 drops of each in a bowl of boiling hot water. Place a towel over your head and your head over the bowl to breath in the steam. If you find hard to breathe you can remove the towel to let more oxygen in.

Remember a patch test should always be done before using aromatherapy to see if there is an allergic reaction. If you are pregnant, nursing, diabetic, epileptic, on any medication or have heart problems you should check with your physician or aromatherapist first.
