Organic food has gotten a lot of air play over the past few years. A lot of people have been willing to pay a lot more money simply for the potential for health benefits that have been attributed to eating an all organic diet. However, the facts may indicate otherwise. Read and consider carefully before you begin shelling out large amounts of money for differently labeled food.
Social Status Considerations
Simply put, it is a high social status maneuver to eat all organic foods. If your image matters to you, inviting over a lot of people nowadays means that serving anything that is not organic will lose some respect from them. However, offering people organic food and explaining that it may have health benefits can boost your status in their eyes. Since having numerous social ties is good for both your health and your longevity, this is a net positive.
There is no known unilateral standard for proving that something labeled as “organic” actually is. In many cases, the exact same factory farms produce so-called organic produce right beside the standard food that can be bought for dimes on the dollar comparatively. As there is no standard, there is no proof that what you are paying more for is the real deal.
No Known Benefits
Organic foods are said to not have been sprayed with pesticides. However, most pesticides that are in use throughout the developed world are known to be non-toxic to humans. Even the developing world is gradually adopting less potentially dangerous pesticides, which means the existing threat level is very low from any kind of food. In cases such as shelled nuts and foods with thick skin such as citrus fruits, pesticides never even come into contact with what you would actually eat.
On top of the fairly low level of danger from the pesticides most farms use, there is also no known evidence of organic foods being healthier. Throughout laboratory studies, results have been a mixed bag with the vast majority showing that there is little to no benefit to eating organic foods over eating “regular” ones. With no discernible benefit to your health, there is really no reason to pay extra for all organic food.
Organic produce has steadily grown in popularity over the past few years. While eating organic foods is popular and may raise your social status among some groups of people, the actual health benefits of doing so are unknown at best, and possibly nonexistent. On top of this, there is no genuine standard for evaluating whether what is called organic actually is as such. So save your money.
