“We Can Change the World One Garage at a Time”
This is the motto of the Green Garage – an initiative that aims to reduce the impact of vehicles on the environment. The truth is that, for the time being, cars are indispensable for many of us. And no matter – petrol, diesel, hybrid, or electric – our vehicles are not friendly enough to the environment. Electric cars do not emit CO2 while being driven, but still electricity that they use is produced mostly by burning fossil fuels, what means these vehicles are not really as eco-friendly as we would like. That is why other vehicle technology solutions are necessary and Green Garage is where this new inventions could be developed – by students taking part in the EcoCAR Challenge.
The EcoCAR Challenge
EcoCAR: The NeXt Challenge is a three-year advanced vehicle technology engineering competition established in fall 2008 and sponsored by the United States Department of Energy (DOE), General Motors and Natural Resources Canada. Teams from 17 universities across North America are working on a solution that would help to reduce the environmental impact of vehicles. General Motors provides vehicles on which the students are working as well as components and technical mentoring. Students are expected to design and build advanced propulsion solutions; experiment with lightweight materials; improve aerodynamics and utilize alternative fuels such as ethanol, biodiesel and hydrogen. Their aim is to make the car more environmentally friendly without compromising on performance and consumer appeal. We are now in the middle of the contest and the Ohio State University is the leader. Hopefully, when the final day of the competition comes, we will witness introduction of some break-through solutions for green cars of the future.
